The Brevard Ballet Youth Company has brought Prokofiev’s Cinderella to life more than once — including a 2019 staging featuring a 14-year-old academy student in the title role opposite guest artist Arcadian Broad.
A story of kindness rewarded, a magical transformation, and a glittering ball — Cinderella is one of the most beloved narrative ballets in the repertoire, and the Brevard Ballet Youth Company has brought it to Brevard County audiences with all its charm intact.
Prokofiev’s Lush Fairy Tale
Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s romantic 1945 score, Cinderella follows its heroine from a life of drudgery under her stepmother and stepsisters to a fairy-tale ball, where the Fairy Godmother’s magic — and a lost glass slipper — reunite her with the Prince. The ballet is beloved for its blend of storytelling and technique: the comic stepsisters, the radiant Fairy Godmother, and the beautiful variations of the Four Seasons fairies (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter).
A Star Turn for a Young Dancer
The company’s 2019 production of Cinderella, presented at the Eau Gallie High School Performing Arts Center, became a memorable milestone for one young dancer. Academy student Vivien, then just 14, danced the title role — her first principal, partnered role — opposite guest artist Arcadian Broad, the acclaimed Orlando-area principal dancer and choreographer. Of her young star, artistic director Elena Shokhina said simply, “I think she’s going to be professional one day.”
Cinderella Returns to the King Center in 2025
The company brought Cinderella back on May 10, 2025, on the grand stage of the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, set to Prokofiev’s romantic score. Advanced company dancer Maggie danced the title role of Cinderella, partnered by Russian guest artist Alexey Minkin as Prince Charming. Sophia appeared as the Fairy Godmother, with Pheonix and Daisy as the comic Wicked Stepsisters and Jessica Powell as the Stepmother.
The production gave dozens of dancers their moment: the Season Fairies — Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter — were danced by Celeste, Havi, Isabella, and Desi, while company members including Ariana Colon, Madeline, and Taylor appeared as the Brides, surrounded by ensembles of Blooming Flowers, Little Fairies, and Midnight Stars. It is exactly the kind of full-length narrative ballet that develops young artists.
