A graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy who danced with the Kirov Ballet and was personally invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join American Ballet Theatre, Luba Gulyaeva brings a rare pedigree to Melbourne, FL.
It is not every day that a dancer coached by Mikhail Baryshnikov teaches ballet in Brevard County. Luba Gulyaeva, a member of the Brevard Ballet Academy faculty, carries one of the most distinguished Russian ballet pedigrees you will find anywhere in Florida.
A Vaganova Graduate and Kirov Ballerina
Ms. Gulyaeva is a graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1972 she joined the legendary Kirov Ballet (now the Mariinsky Ballet), one of the two greatest ballet companies in the world, where she danced featured roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Bayadère, and Don Quixote.
Invited to ABT by Baryshnikov Himself
In the 1980s, Ms. Gulyaeva was invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov — then artistic director of American Ballet Theatre — to join the company’s staff, teaching company class and coaching the dancers of one of America’s premier ballet companies. Her additional teaching credits include the Australian Ballet in Melbourne, Australia, the School of American Ballet in New York, and seminars at numerous universities across the United States.
What This Means for BBA Students
When a dancer trains with a teacher of Ms. Gulyaeva’s background, they receive corrections and coaching rooted directly in the Kirov/Mariinsky tradition — the same authentic Vaganova method lineage that shaped the academy’s founder, Elena Shokhina. This is the kind of instruction that is normally reserved for major-city conservatories, available here in Melbourne.
